Ebenezer Nanor - woodcarving
artist
I am a Ghanaian living in a town called
Ashaiaman near the harbor city of Tema. I am married with two girls and
one boy.
I have been carving for the past 30 years. I
really love working with woods that is why I chose to
carve instead of paint. I admire the African types of
woods. I was told by my mother that when I was a child I
liked playing with wood pieces that were left at the
carpentry shops. At times I would go and
collect the pieces of wood at the wood saw mills to play with
them. I just developed a high interest in the woodcarving art
and started doing it after helping a woodcarver for onetime. At
times I will have an art idea on my mind, when I get up, then I
draw it. At times also I visualize a scene and in
the morning I sketch it on a flat board to carve.

I use different types of high quality Ghanaian
woods from the forest areas. I use woods like odum,
mahogany, cedar sapele, teak, and ebony. Ebony woods are
used for small items. The chests are also blackened upon
request and it also looks nice All woods are seasoned so
that it can meet any kind of weather. Much time is taken
to produce neat works.
