The Art
Association of Harrisburg
Pennsylvania
The Art Association of Harrisburg, founded in
1926, is a hub of Central PA cultural events. The
galleries in the historic Governor Findlay Mansion across
from Riverfront Park provide exhibition opportunities for
artists both regional and nationwide. The Art Association
of Harrisburg is the oldest Harrisburg gallery, also
offering popular art classes for children and adults in
Central PA. AAH sponsors many cultural events as well,
such as "The Bal Masque," Harrisburg's Mardi Gras, and
the "Art of Food" competition.
Visitors can stop by this top Harrisburg gallery seven days per
week, and artists can explore exhibition opportunities by
calling us at (717) 236-1432. The wide range of art classes for
children and adults are held during four semesters annually,
while the Central PA cultural events sponsored by The Art
Association of Harrisburg occur regularly throughout the
year.

Watercolor
has always been a part of my life, but life has its way
of getting in the way of where you thought you were
headed. My degree in Studio Art prepared me well to be a
fine art painter and printmaker but, darn it, the
classifieds weren't full of want ads for watercolorists.
Unfortunately, a large majority of fine art graduates
leave the field altogether when they enter the 'real
world'. I did. (Damn the computer.)
Pennsylvania Watercolor
Society
Our Mission... is to encourage, promote and advance water media
painting on paper through the education of artists and the
general public.
In late March 1979 a group of 12 Pennsylvania watercolor
artists led by Nick Riggeri established the Pennsylvania
Watercolor society. The first show was held in Strawberry
Square, Downtown Harrisburg. Of the 311 entries for the show,
132 were hung in the exhibit. Gold Silver and Bronze medals,
cash and prizes were awarded. Since that time, many other
awards and prizes have been established.
General membership of PWS is open to all artists working in
water media on paper. Although most of our members come from
Pennsylvania, membership is offered to artists nationwide. We
also have a few international members. As a nonprofit
organization, reasonable dues are charged to help defray
expenses. The business of the Society is performed by an
executive board located in Central Pennsylvania. This board of
watercolorists arrange the details for workshops, juried shows,
member shows as well as publish a quarterly newsletter and
maintain a lending library. An executive director is appointed
by the board to oversee the budget and keep all organizational
needs on track.
